Abstract

In this composition, I chose to create an abstract piece that comprised of organic shapes and patterns especially found on butterfly wings. I ideated coral reef like structures to 3D model for this. I laser cut and engraved a top piece for detailing and spray painted both units after adding illustrative elements to one unit with hot glue.

I chose to create an abstract piece that consisted of organic shapes and patterns especially found on butterfly wings. I ideated coral reef like structures to 3D model for this. After sketching my idea, I iterated further in Rhino before deciding on the final design. I modified the corners from iteration two to iteration three so that they would be more rounded [to allow for the ¼” end mill to move around easily. After ensuring there was at least a ½ inch space between each pattern and no narrow corners, I sent my file to be milled. I used the drill press to remove the inner parts of the pieces and the cylindrical sandbelt to further sand the edges. I used wood glue to glue the pieces together and left them clamped overnight to dry. I laser cut and engraved a top piece for detailing and spray painted both units after adding illustrative elements to one unit with hot glue. For next time, I would have liked to vinyl cut some of the illustrative elements and stick them onto the units first before spray painting and hot gluing additional elements. The vinyl cut stickers would act as stencils that can be removed or decor that stays.
