For my Senior Capstone Concert, I am choreographing an interdisciplinary work that incorporates projections and movement to explore the concept of the self. I am collaborating with an animator from STAMPS, Olivia Ortiz, to create a 30-second video that will be projected on a screen on the stage. The animation will be a combination of rotoscoping and digital collage. The dancers will interact with animated versions of themselves on screens and images will be projected on their physical bodies.
The process will be collaborative and experimental. I want to incorporate somatic-based mindfulness practices in my choreographic process to both generate movement and to allow the dancers to investigate different parts of their identity through a corporeal and visual lens. In my own life, I have used somatic-based therapy to help me work through issues regarding my sense of self. Hopefully this process will allow me to combine the performative aspects of the arts with movement therapy concepts to explore the subconscious sense of self through choreography and animation.
