Drag Event

Drag Me to Paradise

Sanidhya Patel, College of Engineering

Collaborators: Divya Agarwal, CoE/LSA; Amya Hentschel, LSA; Raki Krishnan, CoE/LSA

Our project is inherently interdisciplinary, combining elements of art, performance, cultural education, community building, and project management. This approach is particularly appropriate because drag is a multifaceted art form that incorporates fashion design, makeup artistry, theatrical performance, and storytelling. By engaging engineering, marketing, and arts students, we blend creative expression with organizational planning and audience engagement, making the event both impactful and educational.

The arts play a central role in this project, with drag serving as a powerful medium for self-expression and advocacy. Drag performances create opportunities for performers to share their stories and showcase their identities while providing attendees with a captivating and thought-provoking experience. By highlighting the cultural significance of drag and the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, the event demonstrates how the arts can promote understanding, healing, and empowerment.

This is a group project led by a diverse team of University of Michigan students, each contributing unique skills to ensure success. We recognize that interdisciplinary collaboration comes with both benefits and challenges. By leveraging our team’s diverse backgrounds and perspectives, we enhance creativity, problem-solving, and inclusivity. To address potential challenges, such as differing priorities or communication gaps, regular team meetings, a clear plan of action, and defined roles will help us stay aligned and collaborative.

The expected impact on campus and the local community is substantial. This event will offer a safe, welcoming space where students can celebrate diversity, learn about LGBTQ+ culture, and engage in community-building. For many, it will be an introduction to drag as an art form, promoting empathy and cultural awareness. By donating proceeds to the Jim Toy Community Center, we also contribute to long-term support for LGBTQ+ services in the community.

Our team has the necessary skills to carry out this project successfully. Divya has experience in project management and campus engagement, while Sunny is skilled in research and marketing strategies. Raki brings expertise in financial planning, and Amya excels at communication and talent coordination. Together, we are prepared to overcome challenges and create an unforgettable, impactful event.
