Abstract

I designed a memory flashcard game aimed at educating medical students, specifically those specializing in dermatology about the clinical signs of illnesses that can appear in black and brown skin. The primary objective of these cards would be raising awareness about the lack of diversity in the medical education system, which has resulted in numerous misdiagnoses of black and POC (people of color)patients. Although this deck has only 18 cards, I understand that these are not enough and there is a need for expansion. I would like to take this project outside of school and make the deck more extensive, with a more variety of illnesses. Each card features information about each illness including the description, unique traits, treatments, and symptoms of the respective illness; while the picture of the sickness is shown on the other side of the flashcard. To make the flashcards more engaging, I have included a point system and two games for the user to play: Flip-a-Card (one-player) and What is That Illness? (multiplayer). Lastly, it’s important to note that this product is not finalized and I do realize that there needs to be more enhancements. I am also highly interested in feedback and expanding my project further.
