Abstract
This artwork depicts some of the evolutions and major contributions of different types of sail design. The square sail is rectangular in shape that faces perpendicular to the ship’s hull while attached to a horizontal yard, this allows it to catch wind from behind the ship propelling the ship forward. The lanteen sail did a great deal to advance the efficiency of ocean travel, and greatly expanded trade networks. The sail itself creates pressure between the sail’s convex and concave sides, it is this that helps propel the ship in its desired direction.
This artwork depicts some of the evolutions and major contributions of different types of sail design. The sail designs represented are the square sail and the lanteen sail. The square sail is rectangular in shape that faces perpendicular to the ship’s hull while attached to a horizontal yard, this allows it to catch wind from behind the ship propelling the ship forward. However it being in a stationary position limits its mobility therefore limiting its ability to sail close to the wind. This is where the evolution and the contribution of the lanteen sail comes into play greatly changing the future of the way we cross ocean waters. The lanteen sail did a great deal to advance the efficiency of ocean travel, and greatly expanded trade networks. The sail itself creates pressure between the sail’s convex and concave sides, it is this that helps propel the ship in its desired direction. The drawing itself is ink. I chose this because I felt it was the best medium to get across the designs in a simple format like something you’d see in a textbook. I did not add color to the ink drawing because I feared it might distract from the details on both ships. I wanted the lines to come across as bold for the outline then added some shade for the shadows by lighting the ink. Hopefully the details of both designs come out clear and concise.
